Ames Instrument Company offers three different types of Surveyor's Compasses. The Plain compass, the Vernier, and the Basic compass. The PLAIN and
VERNIER
COMPASSES have a circle divided to 1/2 degrees on a dividing engine. Both the
circle and the face are silvered. The needle pivots on a sapphire jewel, and there is a lifter to raise the needle when not in use. The glass is held in place by a bezel ring which unscrews allowing easy access to the needle to adjust for local magnetic conditions. The needle is 5-13/16 inches long. The sights are eight inches high and fifteen inches apart. The VERNIER COMPASS is the outside type moved by a tangent screw and can be locked into place by an internal clamp. It is graduated into thirty equal parts in two series on each side of the middle line. The limb or primary arc is graduated to half degrees. The compass socket is a nicely turned post which has a clamp screw to lock the compass in any direction. A safety catch locks the instrument as soon as it is set on the spindle. All the hand screws are double knurled. In addition, each instrument is fitted into a mahogany box. Tripods are also available. They have turned mahogany or cherry legs with brass tips. When a compass and tripod are purchased together, a brass plummet is included. |
