This compass is designed to be a low cost tool for the instruction in the principles of geometry, as well as create an appreciation of land surveying and history....

An excellent tool to take outdoors and demonstrate how to measure distances by triangulation, as well as bisect rectangles, parallelograms, calculate acreage, run straight lines despite obstacles etc. The tripod makes it easy to set up in a classroom.

Included is a pamphlet with some sample problems and surveying terminology (Download Pamphlet). The instructor can also tailor problems to suit the occasion. This pamphlet also has instructions for the care of, and adjustments to the compass.

This compass is constructed from aluminum, with brass screws that lock the compass on the spindle and operate the needle lifter. The sights are aligned on a centre line which passes thru the centre of the degree ring and the pivot that the needle swings on. The four inch needle has a jeweled hub to insure the utmost accuracy.

Links to larger photoThe degree ring is divided into quadrants and graduated by single degrees. "E" and "W" are transposed on the compass face so the operator will always know what side of the degree ring is being read. The bezel ring unscrews to allow the operator to access the needle to compensate for local magnetic dip. A "bulls-eye" level in the face of the compass makes leveling of the instrument quite easy. The tripod legs are solid Philippine mahogany, and the tripod stem is integral to prevent it from being lost. The sights are also permanently attached and fold down for storage. This keeps them from being lost also.
