Powder Horn Compass
Powder Horn Compass
The powder horn is one of the best places to carry a compass as the horn was protected in various ways against the elements and generally guarded against accident.

Mostly these compasses were adapted from what was at hand. There is one surviving example of in a horn carried by Rogers Rangers, and there was one in Johnson Hall in Johnstown, N Y years ago. It is not only useful, but it really looks nice on a horn, I guess it could decorate a fancy box also. In the picture to the right , one is shown upside down to illustrate the width of the flange, (degree ring). This makes for foolproof inletting.

The compass starts out as an 11oz. piece of solid brass bar stock, and is machined down to about 2 oz.

 EASY ONE - STEP INLETTING

  • A 7/8” spade drill is all that is needed.
  • Drill the plug to depth, note that the tip of the spade drill also clears for the tip on the bottom of the compass.
  • Then install the plug in the horn, it would be best to affix the compass last.
