GOLDSMITH CHANDLEE
1746-1821 was an outstanding instrument maker who lived in Winchester
Virginia . His shop and foundry, located at Piccadilly and Cameron
streets, are still standing.
Chandlee compasses were ahead of their
time. They had a conversion chart on the arm for converting tenths of
perches to links which reflected the changing methods of land measuring
at that time.
The unique outkeeper keeps track of chains
or distance measured and converts to poles. It is a wheel set below the
compass face, and has 16 numbered divisions which appear individually
in a small window. It was turned one click every 10 two pole chains. One
complete turn equaled one mile. This is most probably a Chandlee
invention, and well ahead of its time.
Chandlee compasses are works of art blending
with 18th century technology. His compasses were in much demand and
there was a long waiting list. George Washington was among the many
prominent surveyors that used his instruments.
